We talked to Sabina recently and were told that the Blog series (which took a little breather for the Summer) was to return and that the feedback we and our fellow “diary of a small business owner(s)” had received referenced the need to get more down and dirty with the truth about owning and running one’s very own small biz.
We Head Haunchos have never cottoned to not telling the nitty gritty details of the ups/downs of “PRENEURSHIP”. The decision was made to play devil’s advocate to if not all, many of the “benefits of being an entrepreneur”. So, respectfully snipped from an insightful article found online http://ezinearticles.com/?10-Benefits-Of-Being-An-Entrepreneur&id=1057445, Here goes brutal honesty, Southern Style:
1. Being in Control (RE: Being your own Boss)
This is certainly one of the greatest benefits of owning your own business. However, when summer rolls around, and you live in the Deep South and your product is rooted in the fall -spring season, motivation can be an issue. This is especially true when you’re in a partnership, and the truth is, neither partner is particularly interested in being anyone’s boss. This in part because all the bossiness is being used on the 6 children who are out of school and commandeering the office (ie home).
2. Work becomes fun
This is absolutely the truth-no cranky work mates, lots of laughs, coffee and PJ’s meet the dress code.
3. Free from Boredom
We’ll skip that because we are never bored, but unfortunately many things like certain Nationally Televised Trials can also pique our interest and keep us very un-bored and un-focused.
4. Better relations with other people
TRUE! It is so fun and rewarding to talk to other folks in our same boat and brainstorm/gripe/ learn from each other regarding the position that is unique to all of us and only the small business owner/entrepreneur could begin to understand.
5. Self Confidence
Not a problem; ever. Oh, except for those cobras of self doubt that crawl up and hiss at you, generally between the hours of 1 and 4 am EST.
6.Giving Back to Society
That (besides the obvious desire to make money and gain independence) is the biggest dream of ours. To be able to provide employment to fellow human beings as well as gift monies to charities and causes near and dear to our hearts… that would be hugely gratifying and the aspect most important for our children to see.
7.Free from Wants
Well, the gentleman who wrote this is a better person than we. He indicates that the entrepreneur becomes so engrossed in her work, that it leaves no room for frivolities. HMMM, we’ve got horses to feed, trips to take, wines to taste, fashions to drool over….
8.Being Original and True to one’s sel(ves)
Can’t argue there. Starting Hold Your Haunches has allowed us to parlay our schtick into an actual business. When we are met with resistance to our irreverence, we simply know that not everyone will be a customer of ours. We would be miserable if we had to acquiesce to other people’s version of corporate behavior-hence, our own business.
9.Enjoying time out
Ummm, Yep. Just need a little guidance sometimes to resume “time in”
10. The Exhilaration of Success
Even being less than one year old, we have had a great deal of local press and sprinklings of national. Every article, blog link, heck, every Twitter mention is smile x 10000000. We believe in our product and know there is a massive market for it-so we keep plugging-and expect success beyond our dreams eventually.
Now, if we could just get these precious distractions back in school…..
