Much like wine, leggings are one of God’s greatest gifts to mankind. We love them -- and we know you love them, too. And for three glorious seasons a year, we can pretty much get by wearing leggings 3-4 times a week (or every day if you’re creative), but unfortunately, then comes summer. Once the warm weather rolls in, we’re mostly left standing in front of our closets, looking at the uncomfortable zippers and buttons and bathing suits that haven’t fit in five years, thinking “what now?” But despair no longer, ladies. We’ve got the answer to the question everyone has been asking for years: how does one wear leggings in the summer?
When it comes to wearing leggings when it’s warm out, one of the most important things to consider is your location and the time of day. Obviously leggings are not a great bathing suit cover up, nor would you wear them while playing tennis at noon when it’s 100 degrees out -- but you already knew that. So, when can you wear them, you ask? Well, here are some options:
When It’s Raining
By now we all know that there’s only one thought that comes to mind when you see a woman wearing a shorts and boots...and that thought is not “Wow! What a classy looking lady!” So, what are you supposed to wear when it’s raining and you’re required to wear, you know, rainboots? Leggings, of course! Put on your favorite pair of Hold Your Haunches, wiggle into your adorable wellies, and top off the look with a cute tank, a summertime scarf, and a chic ponytail. Oh, and don’t forget your umbrella!
May we talk about how cold grocery stores are during the summer? Santa would be comfortable living there. And though, because of the outside heat, those initial blasts of cool air are nice when you first walk in, after about 15 minutes or so, you’re nothing more than a shivering mess wondering which items you can do without so you can hightail it out of the frigid store as soon as possible. So, what’s a girl to do when she has a grocery list a mile long and hungry mouths to feed? Get creative with her outfit. For a long day of errands, we suggest wearing your favorite pair of Hold Your Haunches, comfortable sandals, a tank or thin, cotton tee, and a light jacket tucked away in your purse. While you certainly won’t need the extra layer outside the many stores you’ll inevitably be going in to on errand day, you’ll appreciate the jacket once you find yourself standing underneath a fan that is quite literally blowing icy air on your bare shoulders.
If there’s one place that is colder than the grocery store (and possibly Antarctica), it is the movie theatre. Lord Jesus, that place is all sorts of freezing. So, what’s a girl to do when it comes time to experience all of those great summer blockbusters? Dress for success, obviously. With the whole movie experience comes the opportunity to relax in comfy seats and gorge yourself on buttery popcorn and overpriced chocolate goodies, so you definitely want to be comfy. Still, the theatre is a gathering place, and there’s nothing worse than running into some of your old classmates while you’re wearing sweats and a messy bun -- so you’ve got to be smart about your outfit. Once again, we suggest layers. One of the best casual movie outfits entails your favorite leggings, a pair of Keds or Converse (because ain’t nobody got time for literal cold feet), and a loose V-Neck. Don’t forget to pack your favorite comfy sweater and to bring along your favorite date for some movie-time snuggles.
